Opinion: Ghana Must Blend Local Languages with English in Our Education System

Language is a powerful tool in education. While English remains important for global communication, higher education and professional opportunities, Ghana must recognize the value of its indigenous languages in teaching and learning. Many Ghanaian students struggle when complex ideas are introduced only in English, especially at the early stages of education. Blending local languages with English would help students understand concepts better, build confidence and improve academic performance. Our local languages carry our history, culture and identity. Promoting them in education does not mean rejecting English; rather, it means using both languages to create a stronger and more inclusive education system. The government should invest in teacher training, learning materials and a clear bilingual education policy. Ghana does not have to choose between English and our local languages..we can use both to prepare students for the future. The question is not whether English is important; it is whether we can use our own languages to strengthen education. I believe we can and we should.
